In Judaism, the first five books of the
Hebrew Bible (Christian Old Testament), which
are ascribed to Moses. It contains a
traditional history of the world from the
Creation to the death of Moses; it also
includes the Hebrew people's covenant with
the one God, rules for religious observance,
and guidelines for social conduct, including
the Ten Commandments. Scrolls on which the
Torah is hand-written in the original Hebrew
are housed in a sacred enclosure, the ark, in
every synagogue, and are treated with great
respect. Jews believe that by observing the
guidelines laid down in the Torah, they
fulfil their part of their covenant with God.
