  1. In Judaism, the first five books of the
  2. Hebrew Bible (Christian Old Testament), which
  3. are ascribed to Moses. It contains a
  4. traditional history of the world from the
  5. Creation to the death of Moses; it also
  6. includes the Hebrew people's covenant with
  7. the one God, rules for religious observance,
  8. and guidelines for social conduct, including
  9. the Ten Commandments. Scrolls on which the
  10. Torah is hand-written in the original Hebrew
  11. are housed in a sacred enclosure, the ark, in
  12. every synagogue, and are treated with great
  13. respect. Jews believe that by observing the
  14. guidelines laid down in the Torah, they
  15. fulfil their part of their covenant with God.
